The Power Saver Rewards program rewards you for helping Broad River Electric ease the “peak” demand for electricity. Peak electric demand refers to the point of highest electricity use over a certain period of time. It is also when electricity is most expensive.
2 seasons, 2 peaks -- the switch saves you from feeling the heat when you don't want to
In the summer, demand is usually greater as electricity is used to cool homes and businesses, especially during weekday afternoons when other appliances are being used as well. In the winter, demand is during the morning hours when electricity is used to warm homes and heat water.
Broad River Electric will coordinate with professional service technicians to have switches installed that briefly cycle off air conditioners and water heaters during peak usage.

About the Air Conditioner Switch
The smart switch installed on your air conditioner will help reduce peak demand by cycling the unit off and on during the summer months. During periods of high electricity use, a signal is sent to the smart-switch to interrupt the flow of electricity to the compressor for a brief period of time. Only electricity to the compressor is interrupted. The indoor fan will continue to run as programmed.
*To qualify for our PSR program members must meet certain energy requirements.
Off and on before you know it with no switch to your comfort
Summer cycling typically occurs Monday through Friday between the hours of 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. The length of a cycling event will depend on the need for BREC to reduce electric demand, but will not exceed 15 minutes. The program is designed so that you won’t notice a difference in the comfort of your home. Any change in temperature should be minimal because of the method and length of the cycling event.
About the Water Heater Switch
The smart switch installed on your water heater will help reduce peak demand by cycling the unit off and on throughout the year.
During periods of high electricity use, a signal is sent to the smart-switch to interrupt the flow of electricity to the heating element inside the tank for a brief period of time. The previously heated water will still be available for you to use.
Off and on before you know it, hot water whenever you need it
Water heater cycling typically occurs Monday through Friday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. The length of a cycling event will never exceed 20 minutes.
Members rarely notice the switch has operated. The reserve in the water heater tank should supply plenty of hot water during the time a water heater is cycled off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the program lower my monthly electric bill?
Beyond the bill credits, Power Saver Rewards does not significantly reduce the direct cost of your monthly electric bill. It does, however, reduce the amount of kilowatt-hours purchased by Broad River Electric during peak times of energy use. This helps Broad River Electric keep rates down. Power purchased during peak hours is expensive.
Who will install the switch?
Broad River Electric uses certified professional technicians to install the smart switches.
Will this void my warranty?
Since the switch only manipulates the electric current flowing to the appliance, its functionality is not compromised. It’s just like moving the temperature a degree or two yourself. We advise that you check with your equipment maintenance provider with warranty questions.
What if I need maintenance or repair?
You will need to make the service technician aware that you are participating in a load management program so they do not inadvertently disconnect the switch.
How long will the switch be installed?
Participants are obligated to a 4-year commitment. Removal of either of the devices prior to that term will require a reimbursement of the one-time incentive at a pro-rated value.
