August is often the hottest month of the year, and that can mean a higher electric bill. Members often ask why, but it’s not just one thing. Your bill reflects several factors that combine to provide reliable power whenever you need it.
The cost of power
A major factor is how much electricity you use. During the summer, that’s driven largely by your air conditioner. As temperatures climb, your system runs longer to keep your home comfortable, and cooling can account for more than half of your summer energy use.
Wholesale power costs also play a role. Broad River Electric works with other cooperatives to purchase electricity in bulk at reduced cost, but when extreme heat drives up demand, power becomes more expensive.
When you use electricity matters, too. During the summer, electricity costs the most between 3–6 p.m., when air conditioners across our region are working hardest. Meeting that peak demand requires additional generation resources, increasing the overall cost of power.
The service we provide
Electricity isn’t simply a product—it’s an around-the-clock service. Our employees maintain thousands of miles of power lines, substations and other equipment so electricity is available the instant you need it. The Grid Access Fee helps cover the cost of maintaining that reliable electric system.
What’s not in your bill
Unlike investor-owned utilities, Broad River Electric is a not-for-profit cooperative. Your bill does not include profits for shareholders. Instead, you pay only for the cost of providing safe, reliable electric service.
How you can save
Understanding your bill is the first step toward lowering it. During the summer, raising your thermostat a few degrees and using ceiling or portable fans can reduce air conditioning costs while keeping you comfortable.
You can also save by shifting the use of major appliances—such as clothes dryers, dishwashers and ovens—outside the 3–6 p.m. peak period, when electricity is most expensive. Small changes during those hours can make a noticeable difference.
