Broad River Raises Over $20K with Comedy Show

Broad River Electric Cooperative’s benefit comedy show “Beef Stew for the Brain to Fight Senior Hunger” featuring iconic comedian James Gregory raised $20,000 for local agencies that deliver meals to elderly and shut-in clients.
The funds will be distributed among four agencies in Cherokee, Union and Spartanburg Counties, where Broad River Electric serves most of its membership. Cherokee County Meals on Wheels will receive $8,000. Spartanburg Mobile Meals will receive $6,000. The Union County Council on Aging and the Union Meals on Wheels will each receive $3,000. .All four are non-profit organizations whose mission is to deliver meals to local residents who are unable to provide their own.
It was Gregory’s first public appearance in Cherokee County, but the veteran funny-man made it well worth the wait for the over 1,000 people in attendance Thursday, February 25 at Broad River Electric Auditorium.
In addition to ticket sales, the event also received support from local businesses through corporate sponsorships. Hee-Haw Sponsors included Hollywood's Productions Inc., Asphlundh Tree Experts, Upstate Carolina Medical Center, Pike Energy Solutions, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, The Gaffney Ledger, The Cherokee Chronicle, WZZQ-FM, WBCU Radio. Cackle Sponsors included Piedmont Natural Gas, Buford St. Drugs & Ace Hardware, Cherokee Civic Club, Cooperative Electrical Energy Utility Supply, Total Care Home Health/Gentiva Company, Grayco Electrical, and Image Plus Signs. Chuckle Sponsors included Staff Masters USA, Davis Services, Inc., First Piedmont Federal, Brooks Moss Law, Blakely Funeral Home, Sun Belt Medical Resources, Shealy Electric, Praise Enterprises, and Print Depot.
“This was a great night for everyone involved,” said Broad River CEO Richard Baines. “I know everyone who came enjoyed themselves, but more importantly, we were able to raise a significant amount of money for a worthy cause.”
The show is likely to become an annual event. Broad River has tentatively booked Gregory for another show in February 2011. The proceeds from that show will benefit another cause, to be determined.
Broad River Electric Cooperative is one of 20 member-owned electric co-ops in South Carolina serving Cherokee, Spartanburg, Union, and Newberry counties in South Carolina and portions of Cleveland, Polk, and Rutherford counties in North Carolina with accountability, integrity, innovation, and commitment to community.

Co-op Bringing James Gregory to Gaffney

He dishes out “beef stew for the brain” but the bites of hilarious wisdom James Gregory serves-up in Gaffney next month will literally help feed seniors and shut-ins.
Broad River Electric Cooperative will bring the iconic comedian to its auditorium on Thursday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. for his first ever public performance in Cherokee County.
The event will raise funds for senior hunger charities inCherokee, Spartanburg and Union Counties.
For over two decades, veteran comedian James Gregory has provided audiences with a down-home, hilarious comedy experience. It’s storytelling at its best, rib-tickling reflections on life from the front porch.

He continues to entertain sold-out crowds attheaters, comedy clubs and corporate events. Thanks to this constant touring and his weekly appearances on syndicated radio shows such as Rick and Bubba, John Boy and Billy, and Bob and Tom, Gregory now has a grass-roots following that numbers in the millions.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the show.

A discount rate for a group of 10 is available for $180.
