Broad River Electric Cooperative is proud to announce the formation of Broad River Electric Charities, Inc., a non-profit organization that will disburse funds for charitable purposes in Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union Counties.
 Most of those funds will come from the cooperative’s Operation Round-Up program. Beginning with the October 2010 billing period, the monthly balance of member’s accounts will be rounded up to the nearest dollar. That extra change will go to a benevolent fund that will assist individuals, organizations, and goodwill missions in and around Broad River’s service area. The program is voluntary and members can easily opt-out at any time by contacting the Broad River office.
“The impact on the individual member is minimal,” explained Member Services Coordinator Josh Crotzer. “It would cost an average of $6 per year and never more than $12 annually, per account. However, consider what that change can do when it’s combined with rest of our membership. It has the potential to make a tremendous impact on our community.”
The rest of the money will be come from events like the James Gregory benefit comedy that was held in February and raised over $20,000 for senior hunger charities. Plans are being made for similar events in the future.
The fund will be managed by a 7-member governing board appointed by Broad River Electric Cooperative Board of Directors. The charter board consists of Daisy Lemmons and Trudy Martin of Cherokee County, Robert Bodie and Barbara Whitney of Spartanburg, and Barbara Pridemore and Carol Smith of Union. Richard Baines is the ex-officio as CEO of Broad River Electric Cooperative.
“Broad River has always upheld a strong commitment to community,” stated Baines. “We believe it is our responsibility as an institutional leader to provide a hand up to those who need it and to work in conjunction with the organizations that are already making our communities better. Broad River Electric Charities and Operation Round Up will allow the entire cooperative membership to participate in that commitment and make it that much stronger.”
