Low-Cost, Energy Saving Tips for the Summer

Home energy costs will rise with the temperature this summer as air conditioning puts upward pressure on energy usage.
To help consumers reduce their home energy bills and help the nation reduce overall energy use, Broad River Electric Cooperative offers the following no-cost/ low-cost tips on smart energy practices and energy-efficiency home improvements this summer.

The first place to start is your AIR CONDITIONER:

• Set thermostats to 78°F
• Always run your HVAC system fan on “AUTO.” Running it on “ON” uses more electricity and can decrease your air conditioner’s ability to remove moisture.
• Change HVAC filters monthly.

Broad River Announces Formation of Charity Organization

Broad River Electric Cooperative is proud to announce the formation of Broad River Electric Charities, Inc., a non-profit organization that will disburse funds for charitable purposes in Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union Counties.
Most of those funds will come from the cooperative’s Operation Round-Up program. Beginning with the October 2010 billing period, the monthly balance of member’s accounts will be rounded up to the nearest dollar. That extra change will go to a benevolent fund that will assist individuals, organizations, and goodwill missions in and around Broad River’s service area. The program is voluntary and members can easily opt-out at any time by contacting the Broad River office.

Sanders’ Story Inspires, Reaps Home Improvements

Frances Sanders isn’t able to get out and about like she used to. But her story is making rounds in Washington, D.C.
Sanders, a long-time Broad River member who lives alone on a widow’s pension check, is featured in a YouTube video that is being shown to Congressmen, federal commissions and other seats of power. The video, produced by the Electric Cooperative of South Carolina, uses Sanders’ circumstances and that of other members around the state to show the debilitating costs of energy and weatherization.
